Key Concepts & Themes

Feminism is a commitment to gender equality, and involves challenging the systems and structures that have historically concentrated power in the hands of a few, and working toward a world where everyone can participate fully and be treated with dignity.

Intersectionality recognizes that people can hold multiple identities at once – gender, race, culture, language, immigration status, sexuality, ability and more – and that these identities interact with one another in ways that shape a person’s experiences of privilege and oppression.

Equity is different from equality. Equality means giving everyone the same thing; equity means giving people what they actually need, recognizing that not everyone starts from the same place.

Agency is the ability to make meaningful choices about your own life – to have a voice, be heard, and to have that voice actually matter. In organizational terms, agency means creating structures where people at all levels can participate in decisions that affect them.

Dignity is the recognition that every person has inherent worth. It means being treated, and treating others, with respect, compassion, and care, regardless of circumstance. In practice, dignity shapes how we communicate, how we design programs and how we hold space for one another.

Solidarity means standing alongside others in their pursuit of justice with consistency and courage, not just when it’s convenient. It’s about how injustice anywhere affects us all, and that our work is stronger when we do it together rather than in isolation.

Justice means challenging systems and structures that cause harm and working toward ones that are fair, transparent, and accountable. Social justice, in particular, asks us to look beyond individual actions and examine the policies, institutions and power dynamics that shape people’s lives.

Decolonization is the process of recognizing, challenging and dismantling the ongoing impacts of colonialism, including the structures, policies and practices of organizations. For Beyond Barriers, that has meant actively working to centre Indigenous ways of knowing, being accountable to Indigenous communities and examining how colonial systems continue to shape the non-profit sector.

Indigenization is the process of incorporating Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, values and ways of being into institutions, organizations and systems that have historically excluded or marginalized them. Going beyond simply including Indigenous people in existing structures, it asks those structures to change in ways that genuinely reflect and honour Indigenous worldviews. This means examining policies, practices, and decision-making processes through an Indigenous lens and making meaningful changes accordingly.
